The ol' Japanese brushes...

The night scenes in this storyline are puttin' my Japanese brushes through their paces! So much ink! I could restart the East India company with all this ink! Today's strip contains 732 imperial pounds of the stuff! :)

Oh, you guys're worrying too much. Given today's conversion rates, plus allowing for 130 years of inflation, an imperial pound today equals approximately (check the abacus...carry the 7...) : 4800 denarii.
Wait, wait. Jeeze. S'what happens when you hold your abacus upside-down. OK - carry the 14 and viola: 732 imperial pounds = 1.573 oz on today's exchange.

When all the college newspapers that carry the strip are added in, it probably does come to 732 pounds of ink. Way to endear them to you, Dave. :)

So how long did it take your drafting table to snap in half like dry kindling? How many tables did you go through before finishing this artwork and then manage to drag it off to the publishers?

He used a warehouse forklift, obviously. :)
Just think of the time it took to dry, though. He must have used 411 heat lamps and a hand held hairdryer.
Then there is the cost of the upcoming hernia operation......

So funny. By the time I got to panel 2 I was thinking in the back of my mind "Did he just outline the shapes or did he really fill in all those blacks with ink?"

So the black made me wonder about drawing styles. Why the white outlines around the characters? Why did you not draw them to look like this?

(I couldn't figure out how to get the "img" tag to work.)
Or is the black outline an integral part of how the characters are drawn, so you need a white "halo" to make it distinct from the black background?
Just wondering.
