Interview Time
Sunday, April 13, 2008 - 04:45 PM

Every once in a while a podcast will invite me on for an interview about "Sheldon"...but I've rarely had as in-depth or enjoyable an interview as the one I recorded with "
Art & Story".
My portion starts at the 10-minute mark, so skip the exposition at the front, if you'd like. Here are some of the topics we covered in the chat:
- How do I create "Sheldon"?
- What's the point of the strip? Why do I do it?
- What's more important in cartooning: The art or the writing?
- How does an artist piece together their "style"?
- What's the tone of "Sheldon"? Optimistic toward the world? Cynical?
- Looking at how Arthur Conan Doyle originally composed "Sherlock Holmes" in episodic updates, what can we learn for longer-form comics online?
- Why did I/we write "How To Make Webcomics"?

Speaking of interviews...any news on when the PBS LiveNation episode did/will air?

It's funny you should mention that. I just yesterday came across the legal paperwork I had to sign for that...and wondered when/if/how it would be airing.
As far as I know, it was just for webcasting...but I can't find hide nor hair of it on their site.

Fun interview! Re: brush pens: Hopefully I'm not beating an already-beaten horse with this, but, Dave (or anyone with a similar issue), I bet if you posted a photo of the side of your favorite Japanese brush pen, someone (if I get to it first, I'd be happy to) could translate it for you. With the name, maybe you could find a place to buy more. I know other cartoonists who've had the same issue, so I thought it was worth risking the "I already thought of that." :)

Great interview. But now I'm trapped in thumb scrutiny. Curse you Mark &/or Jerzy!
I've liked your line work from day one.

You probably have a Kuratake brush pen which you can get from Dick Blick - http://www.dickblick.com/zz207/46/
I have one and love it, but the Pentel Pocket Brush pen is even better! And cheaper, too. - http://www.wetpaintart.com/thumbnail.asp?cid=278
Oh, and for your PITT brush pens - you can DOUBLE the life of them! If you carefully pull the nib out, you will notice it's the same on both ends. Just reverse it and re-insert, and you have a fresh new point! Also, Prismacolor recently came out with their own brush pen. I haven't used it long, but it's nice and and very comparable to the PITT. May be worth a try...

Hope this helps!
