Who doesn't like kind words? (9 comments)

Who doesn't like kind words?

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 05:24 PM

Every once in a while, I'll type "sheldoncomics.com" into Google or Technorati, and see what folks are saying about the strip on their blogs.

Today, I read one of the nicest li'l write-ups on the strip I've ever seen. It's over here, if'n you'd like to read it.

I suppose I don't mention it much, but I should: If you're enjoying the strip, one of the kindest things you can do is mention it to friends online or offline, or take a minute to mention it in your blog or favorite forums. You might think a few kind words don't make a difference, but you'd be amazed: I bet most of you found Sheldon from a friend or from another site kindly linking in.

And in the meantime, thanks to Blake for the kind write-up!

Wow -- and thank you, Dave, for the link back! I'm actually a little stunned that you found my little write-up, especially so fast. I only posted it about an hour ago.

Thanks, though, for one of the absolute best strips on the web. FYI, I also co-host a comic book podcast, and we're scheduling an episode later in the month to discuss our favorite webcomics. I'll be gushing over Sheldon in that one as well. ;)

I'm pretty new to Sheldon, but I gotta say I love it. I've only been reading it for just the last week or so, but it's really drawing me in quickly. It takes me back to the days of reading comics in the papers when I was 10 - it's the kinda stuff that keeps me enjoying comic strips, and that continues to inspire me to try to be a cartoonist myself. I'll definitely be keeping it up with it. Keep up the good work! If you care to, check out my site as well (not many comics yet, but working on it). :)

You introduced me to Sheldon with one of your flyers back in 2001, I think it was.

Is there a .pdf of the current flyer that I could print out and hang at work? I'm always happy to spread the love.

Dave's genius is in his draftsmanship (he spells it, correctly "draught" but I am lazy and generally take spell check's recommendations).

What appear to be simple line drawings in black and white are harder to make work than complicated, full frames. There is nothing to hide behind, no distractions. Like Shaker furniture, the seeming simplicity in his characters' drawings is his strength. Personally, I cannot draw a stick-figure man but I recognize that which looks easy but most decidedly is not. Without a lot of other stuff in the frame, you have to have your draughtmanship (OK, I caved) spot on, and your joke or subject matter has to be clear. With so few lines in the frame it all has to be pretty near ideal to pull it off. That Dave does this day in and day out is amazing. Schultz and McManus were also masters of this art form. The deceptively simple-appearing cartoon strip.

Then there is the whole "coming up with good ideas for the strip" business. For long-running strips this also amazes me. Watterson ran out of material, burned out and quit. Schultz just kept on going and going like the battery bunny. So has Dave.

That my English as a Second Language (ESL) students get his jokes and ideas so easily speaks to Dave's mastery.

People with such talents impress me no end.

Anyone else see a little cyber-winking going on? As in, "gee, Dave, I'm shocked {wink wink} that you found it so fast {wink wink} since I only just posted {wink wink}". Has anyone ever seen Blake and Dave in the same room at the same time? I'm just sayin'.

Seriously though, Dave, I try to pass on the word, particularly to my Notre Dame friends and family. That's how I got hooked.

I've been reading Sheldon since 2003 when a co-worker showed it to me - John Lewis. I've since shown or sent a link to many friends and co-workers.

In my day job, I teach high school English -- I've been known to spread around some of the more literary Sheldon strips (the Shakespeare strips, the Emily Dickenson strip, etc.) amongst the department I've printed out a few and tacked' em to the board too.

Today I was called a "Sheldon Shill" over at boardgamegeek.com. I will wear that badge with pride.
