Comic Recommendation of the Month
Monday, June 16, 2008 - 10:50 PM
Finding good comics on the Web feels like finding a needle in a haystack, at times. There's truly wonderful work, but it's hard to find if you don't know where to look. So I wanted to direct you toward a comic that really stands out for me:
Kukuburi.
Ramón Pérez is really putting together something extraordinary with Kukuburi: A lush, fantastically drawn fantasy that, for me anyway, carries with it echoes of the Tolkien or Narnia books: The unexpected child called away on the hero's quest into a mysterious, magical world where they have unexpected power...and no idea of the challenges they face.
I have no idea where Ramón's goin' with his story arc, but I'm as enthralled as everyone else readin' it. If you haven't yet checked out the strip, yet, do yourself a favor and head on over.

I found this comic a few months ago, and find myself checking it every day for updates even tho Ramon only updates it late Tuesday night. It really is fantastically drawn and beautifully colored.

That was AMAZING. Thanks for the recommendation. I started at the beginning and just plowed my way through the whole thing. Wow.

Am I the only one who keeps getting a 500 Internal Error when they try and look at Ramon's pages?
The first page looked beautifully drawn, and I'm always on the lookout for a new comic, but I just can't see the pages! And the email address that's given to notify the webmaster of the problem just bounces back. :(

Odd. I read through the whole series last night just after midnight (Mountain time) and it was working just fine then. But now this morning I can't even access the home page.
I hope the site gets up and running again soon because I agree that it's entrancing.

Same here - when Dave posted the recommendation I read the whole-thing-up-to-now last night.
Meanwhile, if you like this kind of slightly weird, surreal fantasy comic and you have been living under a rock the last couple years check out http://www.rice-boy.com/ which just finished (four hundred thirty odd pages!) - it's one of the coolest surreal/fantasy things I've ever seen on the web...
This brings to mind: there's various "lists of online comics" out there on the web, but is there such a thing as a recommendation engine? "If you liked X, you might also like Y or Z" that kind of thing? I like Demian5 or Dresden Codak; while some of the supposed 'great web comics' like Penny Arcade or Dinosaur Comics keep me entirely cold. Would be nice if someone had set up some kind of Amazon-like engine somewhere that could steer me towards things that are likely to appeal to me...

Congratulations, Dave, you killed his server. I hope you're pleased with yourself. :p
I got to page 16 before the whole thing went belly up. Not a very good page to quit on, let me tell you.
Looks like he's using Wordpress as a CMS. Wordpress is reportedly very good at bringing servers down, provided the user does not install a caching plugin. See here [codinghorror.com], for example.

Good choice Dave. I've been a fan of Ramon's work for quite a while now. Unfortunately, not only has the increased traffic killed the Kukuburi server, it also appears to have killed Ramon's other on-line comic as well. (Butternut Squash.) Talk about killing with kindness.

Wow! Thanks, Dave! I guess I was one of the lucky ones who got to read it ALL before it crashed. I'm sorry to learn that it did, BTW... but judging by the number of comments he was getting, he was probably pretty close to the bandwidth limit already before you linked to him, so don't beat yourself about the head and shoulders over it.

Dave forgot to mention the coolest thing about this comic: a CHAMELEON is one of the main characters (looks to be a panther chameleon, just like the one I've got at home). Squee!

dave,
thank you kindly for the recommendation! you did indeed "crash" my server - i couldn't even update last night because there was too much traffic!
as i learned a short while ago, wordpress is a cpu hungry beast and i've had to increase my hosting to a private server to keep up with it. though i think i'm going to have to find a new comics vehicle because if this keeps up (not that i mind) it is going to get far too expensive!
a thanks again to you and your readers for the kind words!
cheers,
ramón.

Cool, I didn't read it but you people must have liked it. Can we go over to the Sherman's Lagoon website next and see if we can crash their server? Then we shall move on to Little Dee and crash their website. We shall march across the internet and carve a swath of destruction across all the world's web comics. The world shall come to dread the name of our group and flee in terror when we arrive.
Bwa ha ha ha ha. (dramatic lightning rumble)
Oh wait, this isn't Evil Inc. Never mind.

Thank
you, Ramon, for the truly awesome work! And my apologies for any added trouble with your server.
I suppose the bright note is, that means a lot of Sheldon readers loved it as much as I do!
