Just a small thing about today's comic.
I think the banana that we all know is pretty much created by humans, since it's a cultivated triploid plant specifically for consumption. Wild bananas have numerous large seeds, and way less of that edibe stuff.

I posted this on my blog Targuman [targuman.org] and a reader pointed me to this video of Kirk Cameron and an Australian proving the existence of God with a banana. Was this Dave's inspiration?

I actually came to the same conclusion as Arthur, but with oranges. I mean, what is the evolutionary advantage of growing in bite-sized slices?

Posthumous beat me to it, but he is right about the wild banana...nobody is going to call that thing perfectly designed for humans after seeing it.

In Response to DaveKan (#46648):

I'm assuming Dave is just riffing on the Kirk Cameron "proof of God" madness. Just for the record, though, I thought I'd link to an image of that "perfect fruit" in the wild:

Sure looks tasty, don't it!

Ah, yes, Ray Comfort, the Bananaman.

The discussion is still whether he really *is* that stupid or if he's just putting on a show for the poor sods who're ascared of the concept of Evolution.

He seems to have great trouble understanding the evolution of sexes [scienceblogs.com], too.

Yeah, the "dessert" banana (aka the Cavendish banana) most people are familiar with is so carefully selected that it has no genetic diversity.

In fact, the Cavendish is a second rate banana that was brought in after the Gros Michel was blighted out of cultivation by a fungus... because it also didn't have any genetic diversity. They're saying that the Cavendish will probably also go the same way in the next 10-20 years. At which point, we'll be eating a 3rd rate banana.
