Yeah, I'm gonna disagree with Arthur on this one. True that The Hobbit was originally meant for children, but I just reread it with an eye to wondering what PJ was going to do, and there is more than enough room for expansion.

Also, just calling it The Hobbit is almost a misnomer, because Jackson is going to follow Gandalf's entire journey while he was away from Bilbo and the dwarves. That's an entire movie of plot right there.

If Peter Jackson is going to Middle Earth, I'm there. One movie, three, film the Silmarillion, just tell me when it's in theatres so I can arrange a babysitter.

Of course, I'm one of the nutters who bought all 12 slush books which Christopher Tolkien assembled, so I'm not exactly the average fan. :)

I agree with you completely, Lauren.

Jackson's goal isn't to make a Hobbit movie that looks and feels like a children's book on a big screen. His goal is to make a movie, or rather a series of movies, that fit stylistically--if not tonally--with the Rings movies so that they all feel like they are part of one vast tale. This is, ultimately, what the Red Book of Westmarch was: a sprawling tale of Hobbit adventures that start with Bilbo and end with the dawn of the Age of Men. This includes numerous appendices of material that fill in lots of gaps in the original narratives.

I am a huge Tolkien nut, like you Lauren (I too have the 12 volumes of the History of Middle-Earth), I am a fan of Jackson's Rings movies, and I was quite delighted to hear that he was expanding the Hobbit films so that the entire saga would be greater than the sum of its parts. Does the Hobbit need to be three films? No, but I believe it will benefit greatly from having become three films.

Hey, if Peter Jackson is going to expand on The Hobbit and fit it nicely into the LOTR saga, I'm all over it! But I do have my limits--please, Peter, no Silmarillion, and definitely no Lost Tales!!

You don't have to worry about that. Only the rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were sold (way back when the Professor was still alive, I believe), nothing else. Christopher Tolkien has a death grip on everything else his father wrote and will most likely never sell movie or television rights to any of it.

Which is a shame because I always felt that the time was right for an HBO-style series, ala Game of Thrones, based on the First and Second Ages of Middle-Earth. A series called "Tales From the Silmarillion" would have been great, though very very expensive.

I haven't see the movie yet but I'm curious about how the story will revolve.

The writing styles are quite different. The Hobbit is really intended as a story to be read to children (as Tolkien first read it to his sons), and consequently written in an almost conversational style, e.g.
