two things: 1. Don't diss on this movie. I'll allow the SNL skit with Dana Carvey in which they go lynch Mr. Potter. But otherwise this is an untouchable classic. 2. It was not a bank. It was a "building and loan". Totally different financial institution.

Incidentally, the old building & loan would probably have been insured by the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC), which covered every insured nickel in the S&L meltdown of the 1980s but died a valiant death in the process:
