Winner Winner

WE HAVE A WINNER!
With huge thanks to everyone who sent in a sketch, illustration, 3-D model, lego construction, dioramas, and more….I wanted to announce that we have a big winner for our “Draw a Ship, Win a Ship” contest: Stuart Ferguson’s 3-D model and print of The Machito!
I was super impressed with the styling choices he made for his Machito…especially on the top of the ship, where the main body meets the ring. Just looks super cool.
And to EVERYONE ELSE who entered: Good news! I was so blown away by everyone’s entries, I’ve decided you’re ALL getting the second-place prize of a signed character sketch.

So! Entrants! Send me your mailing address and preferred character, and they’ll be winging their way to you!

This is Awesome

This is kinda the best thing ever.

Sheldon reader Nate had to dress “as his favorite character” for a “Read Across America” event — and he went as Sheldon. He even brought Arthur, which is doubly rad.

Nate, you win all the high-fives, today. All the high-fives.

Drive Original Art: Vinn Nosh

For those of you who love original art, here’s a neat one: I’ve put a piece of DRIVE original art up on eBay! DRIVE strips are drawn digitally, so original art that you can frame and hang doesn’t come along often.

And this is a particularly cool one: This was the *only* concept drawing of the Vinn-infected Nosh that was brought to inks. There is but one in the world, alas!

The piece is drawn in lightfast, archival inks on acid-free, Bristol stock. The cardstock itself measures 12″w x 9″h, while the drawn image is roughly 6.5″w x 5″h. And you’ll notice that, unlike the final strip version in the strip, this concept drawing has no shirt. So it’s kind of Nosh-as-a-an-Abercrombie&Fitch model, I suppose.

I’ve started it at one penny, as I’d rather have you all decide what it’s worth: And it ships FREE anywhere in the U.S. There are no corrections or mistakes on the piece, so it should frame up really nicely.

And to the lucky DRIVE reader who snags it, I’m happy to personalize the inscription.

Contest! “Draw a Ship, Win a Ship”

WIN A RARE, INKED ILLUSTRATION OF THE “DRIVE” SHIP, THE MACHITO!
———–
HOW:
Enter the contest by submitting an illustration or CGI model of a ship from Drive. Three winners will be chosen!
DEADLINE:
Feb 28, 2015

THEME:
Any ship in the DRIVE universe!

WAIT, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN:
– You can draw/build/model/paint any ship from the DRIVE universe. The Machito, The Tres Primos “3”, La Invencible, The Spark of Thought, a Continuum Cruiser, a Vinn Interdictor, etc, etc
Or, you can conceive of a NEW ship that fits within the style or fleets of existing ships that we’ve seen. So! You can take a stab at the aquatic lines of The Continuum fleet, or the rougher angles of the human fleet, and make a new ship!
– It can be drawn in any medium, or using any software. Inks on paper, watercolors, Photoshop, Illustrator, 3-D modeling software…go nuts. Whatever you enjoy using!
– Creativity is encouraged! Is your ship launching into space? Is it in battle? In robotic dry dock? Flying through pinched space? Have fun with it! Draw something that makes you happy: Something you want to see!
– Copyright on the image remains yours! This is just for fun.

FORMATS:
While I’d recommend you create the initial image in high-resolution (300dpi or higher), please send your actual submission as a web-presentable image file.
– JPG, PNG, GIF
– Saved for web resolution (72dpi)

JUDGING CRITERIA:
“The One Dave Likes The Bestest”

Sheldon Original Art

I’ve put a piece of Sheldon Original Art up on eBay, called “The Joy of Pet Ownership” — with the bidding starting at one penny.
The piece is drawn in lightfast, archival inks and grays on acid-free, vellum Bristol stock. The cardstock itself measure 11″ x 14″ inches, while the drawn image is roughly 7”.5 x 1”1.5 inches.
And for the winning Sheldon fan who snags it, I’m happy to personalize, if you’d like! Something like: “To Ronald, my best friend, with thanks for all the times you let me steal your French Fries.”
Or something else: Up to you!

Shipping in the U.S. is FREE, and just a flat $8 to anywhere else in the world! Throw your hat in the ring: It’s just a penny, to start!

Icon & Logos & Shields…OH MY!

To see what folks can create with them* I’ve shared the vectorized versions of all the imperial logos/icons/shields from today’s strip over on Patreon. I’m encouraging folks to remix/re-imagine them: It’ll be fun to see what folks come up with!

Patreon backers can grab the .ai file from the most recent update.

…Not yet a Patreon backer of the strip? You can help support the strip, and get lots of behind-the-scenes stuff like this, by pledging mere pennies, HERE.

*I’m sharing them under a creative commons, non-commercial, share-alike license. Go nuts! Have fun!

And then they tell two friends, and then they tell two friends…

We all have one sci-fi friend who we take with us to see Interstellar or Guardians of the Galaxy, right? Today I wanted to ask you a favor about that friend.

Can you do me a huge kindness, and drop that friend a quick e-mail: Suggesting they try DRIVE?

Yesterday, I got two e-mails from folks who’d just found the strip, and who read it in one sitting, and their excitement absolutely made my day. Put me in the best mood to draw and write the strip.

So I wanted to ask that small favor of you.

If you would, take a sec to e-mail your sci-fi buddy. You’ll make one cartoonist super happy.

My other strip, DRIVE

Have you read my other strip, DRIVE? If you’re a a scifi fan, I’d super recommend it.

It tells the tale of a second Spanish Empire: A galactic empire. Spain conquered the globe and a good chunk of the galaxy, using technology from a crashed alien ship. But those aliens want their tech back, and attack with an almost religious fervor.

It kinda-sorta combines the scope of Dune with the goofy fun of Hitchiker’s Guide. I think you’ll like it! Give it a try, here:
